Paths and Walkways |

Paths and walkways aren't just for movie stars, they are for everyone! Their purpose is two-fold, to keep your shoes out of the dirt and to look nice. Pretty simple. There are hundreds of ways to make paths and walkways and no way is better than another. The main thing you should be concerned with is stability. If any part of the path is loose you could seriously injure yourself. Also it is easy to confuse a path or walkway with a paver path or walkway. The main difference is in the preperation of the base and the materials. If you would like to see a STEP by STEP photo how-to of the construction of a Path/Walkway go to our Path and Walkway How-to section!
Now for the fun stuff! A path starts with a good base. We at Total Landscape use a gravel base which is compacted followed by sand to help ensure leveling. The minimum depth you need is 4-6" as opposed to using a paver set-up which is 12". Excavate your area but be sure to call Miss Utility first. It is illegal in the state of VA to disturbe the surface of the Earth (i.e any type of digging) without calling. Now that your excavation area is marked and all the utilities are marked its time to start digginnn! Your goal should be to have at least 4-6" of depth and to be relatively flat.
Fill your excavation area with gravel. For a 4" depth you want to be at 2.5" of gravel for 6" you want to be at 4" of gravel. Compact with either a machine or a tamper. Fill the rest with sand remembering to leave room for the stone. If you were using a paver set-up you would do the entire perimieter of the desired walkway first but since we will not be cutting any stones lets start at one end and finish at the other. Do one row at a time. Be sure to make sure all the joints line up and that the stones are evenly spaced. Check and double check using a level to ensure the grade is going away from the house or in the correct dir ection. When you have finished laying all the stones use a rubber mallet to tamp down any high points. When you are finished tamping down the stones check the level again and then fill all the joints with sand. The sand acts like a soft concrete and helps hold all the stones together. (A broom works wonders here) Finally: Walk, walk and walk some more.
